PORT ADELAIDE midfielder Maria Moloney is looking forward to the side making its mark at Alberton this Saturday.

Speaking with the Adelaide media, Moloney was disappointed about the Round 1 loss in Perth, but said the team drew plenty of positives.

“Definitely not the result we wanted…there was a lot of disappointment in the room after the game, I suppose as you’d expect,” Moloney said.

“We’ve got the first one out of the way…you know, we had eight debutantes I think, so to get that one done and dusted and now focus on the next one, I think it will be all up from here.”

The opportunity to be a part of the history-making first Port Adelaide women’s game was not lost on Moloney, who relished her time in Perth.

“(The first game) was an amazing experience,” she said.

“We were fortunate that the whole group travelled, our whole program travelled over. There were board members and staff and over in Perth, there was a huge Port supporter base, so they all came out. Lots of family and friends too. It was a really special day.”

Port Adelaide was 11 points up at the third break, and Moloney says it was inconsistency that cost the group the 12-point loss against West Coast.

“We were up and down a little bit, that might be forgiven in maybe the first quarter, everyone was a bit nervous but you could say that about West Coast, as it was their first game for the year as well,” Moloney said.

“I suppose that is going to be our next focus, consistency throughout the game. We had our review last night and I think Loz (senior coach Lauren Arnell) was just pleased with the way that the girls attacked the footy, particularly in the first few quarters, and the way we came back into the game. There were a few chains of footy there where we were like ‘this is how we want to play’.

“We've only known each other 10 weeks so I think everyone was pretty happy with us being able to put together those chains of footy. There's so much to learn from it, that's the most important thing to take away from the review last night.”

The first home game at Alberton is expected to be a sell-out, with the Western Bulldogs likely to be a strong opponent, come game day.

“We’ll do a bit of oppo analysis this week,” Moloney said.

“We’re expecting a hard contest. They’ve been in the competition for a few years and from previous experience they play really hard. I think Loz just wants us to concentrate on a good contest and bringing a hard game and pressure. We learned a lot from our practice matches that we were able to play so the more that we play footy, the more we will develop those areas.”

Moloney’s game on Saturday was highlighted by a match-high 14 tackles, but the 27-year-old doesn’t dwell too much on individual success.

“Yeah (I’m) definitely pleased, the team has been over the moon with the group that we've got,” she said.

“At the end of the day, I would have preferred to get away with the win rather than individual performance but I think just having an amazing midfield group around us like Abbey Dowrick and Erin (Phillips) and Jac Yorston and then obviously you’ve got your leaders on all the lines, it was an incredible team effort.”
