TALENTED midfielder Hannah Ewings has been nominated for the NAB Rising Star award after a standout performance on Sunday against Carlton.
The South Australian number one draft pick collected a team-high 21 disposals, including 18 kicks and three handballs in a hotly contested game that finished in a draw.
In just her third appearance at AFLW level, Ewings recorded five clearances and laid four tackles, matching her effort with some of the most experienced players on the field.
She was also recognised with nine coaches' votes in the AFL Coaches Association AFLW Champion Player of the Year and has become the second Port Adelaide player to receive a Rising Star nomination in Season Seven, behind Abbey Dowrick.
“I’m pretty stoked!” said Ewings, after finding out the news.
“It’s unbelievable to be receiving this award. Just to be able to be recognised and playing at this high level, it’s been amazing.
“I was just chilling at home, just doing some recovery (this morning) and Juliet (Haslam) rang me and broke the news to me so yeah, that was pretty exciting.”
Thinking back to Sunday’s match, Ewings was pleased with how she performed.
“Midfield is where I probably play my best footy,” she said.
“When I get my hands on the ball and I’m composed with the ball and (can use) my long kick. (The game) was amazing and I had a lot of girls around me that I had support from that helped me and guided me through the game.
“I just want to stay in the team now. Hard work has paid off and to be recognised for that is pretty awesome.”
Ewings was considered one of the most complete players to nominate for the Season Seven Draft after a stellar 2022 SANFLW season, where she polled fourth in the league’s best and fairest count.
The 18-year-old was bestowed All-Australian honours following the 2022 under-18 national championships, boasting excellent natural on-field ability, elite kicking skills and a solid football IQ.
Western Bulldogs’ Rylie Wilcox was the second nominee from Round Three, with two Rising Stars nominated each week of the AFLW competition. Each nominee is awarded $500 from NAB to acknowledge their achievement.
In addition, NAB will award the junior club of each nominee with a $1000 cash NAB Club Recognition Award, which for Ewings, is Roopena Football Club in Whyalla.
The NAB AFLW Rising Star winner will be announced at the 2022 W Awards with the overall winner awarded $20,000 from NAB and a private banker to assist with securing their financial future.
