The Port Adelaide selection panel has chosen Aaron Young to replace Robbie Gray in the Power’s round five side to face Adelaide.

Young, 19, came to Port Adelaide from Victorian club Eastern Ranges after being selected with pick 36 in the 2010 National Draft.

He played as substitute in the Power’s week four NAB Cup match against Melbourne in March and impacted the game in the second half with two goals.

Strong form in the SANFL for North Adelaide, particularly his standout performance in the Roosters’ first win for the season against West, allowed Young to stake a claim as Robbie Gray’s replacement this week.

Port Adelaide’s general manager - football, Peter Rohde, says that Young’s selection is a testament to his hard work in the SANFL and his development as a player through the pre-season.

"He was probably unlucky to miss playing in Round 1," said Rohde.

“He’s had a great pre-season, he came over as a first year player last year and had a few areas he had to work on but we’ve always known that he’s a very talented young player."

“He’s had a big pre-season - of our younger players he was the big improver in the pre-season games and he’s had good form back at North Adelaide for the last 3 or 4 weeks so we been impressed enough to give him an opportunity.”

"He's not the same sort of player as (Robbie) Gray, but he plays similar positions.

"He'll play in the forward line mainly but may spend some time in on the wing or centre square - he's become a very good contested ball player."

David Rodan, Simon Phillips and Cameron Hitchcock are emergencies.
