PORT Adelaide is sweating on the fitness of up to five key players ahead of Sunday’s all-important clash with Hawthorn at AAMI Stadium.

Troy Chaplin (bruised shin), Jacob Surjan (corked calf), Steven Salopek, Paul Stewart and Alipate Carlile were all restricted to bike work during Wednesday’s main training session.

Ruckman Dean Brogan (corked calf) completed part of training, while Brett Ebert limped from the ground after copping a kick to the leg during the physical two-hour session.

Chad Cornes has confirmed he’ll require post-season surgery on a snapped finger tendon, but it’s his troublesome knee that is causing immediate concern.

Only Daniel Motlop (ankle) and Michael Pettigrew (hamstring tendonitis) feature on the club’s official injury list, but midfielder David Rodan confirmed there were a few sore bodies at Alberton.

“At this time of year, a lot of players are playing with some sort of injury,” Rodan said after training.

“We’ll just have to monitor the guys and see how they go. Hopefully, a few bodies pull up all right and we can put our best team on the park.”

At the completion of Wednesday’s session around 25 players, including Nathan Krakouer, Toby Thurstans, Justin Westhoff, Jason Davenport and Matthew Broadbent, volunteered for some extra training from coach Mark Williams.

The half hour hit-out involved wrestling, boxing and other physically punishing activities.

Rodan said the extra training was all about establishing the right mindset for Sunday’s "mini-final" against the ninth-placed Hawks.

“They were some of the blokes that felt they possibly let down the team on the weekend, so they decided to do a few extras and just to push through,” he said.

“It’s just about the fundamentals of our game. You’ve got to get in there, get the hard ball and then work our way from there. I think we went away from that a little bit on the weekend.”
