TONIGHT is the AFL’s night of nights – the 2019 Brownlow Medal count.
Ollie Wines was Port Adelaide’s best performed player last season, collecting 14 votes to finish in a tie for 19th along with Gary Ablett, Joel Selwood (both Geelong) and Jack Macrae (Western Bulldogs).
It’s been 22 years since Brayden Lyle received the club’s first Brownlow votes.
Then vice-captain Lyle received three votes for his 35 disposals and goal in a 33-point loss to Essendon in Round 2, 1997.
Lyle had returned to his boyhood club Port Adelaide after initially being drafted by West Coast.
After five Brownlow votes in 26 games with the Eagles, he added another 15 votes in 90 games for the Power.
Lyle’s three votes in round 2, 1997, were the first of the Port Adelaide Football Club’s now 1485 Brownlow votes.
In 2017, Travis Boak became the first player to top 100 Brownlow votes for the club, and leads all comers with 102 career votes from 264 AFL games.
