Port Adelaide has traded its second round compensatory pick from the Gold Coast received for Nathan Krakouer in exchange for pre-listed Suns player Simon Phillips and their pick no. 35.

In effect however, the Power has not given up anything for Phillips as the Gold Coast will not be using their second round compensatory pick in this year’s NAB AFL Draft allowing Port Adelaide to have successive picks at 34 and 35. Therefore, the Power will retain the same picks it would have carried into the 2010 AFL Draft prior to the Phillips’ deal.

Phillips, 23, has played the last three seasons with SANFL club Norwood and was a key member of their finals campaign this year.

He previously played five games for Sydney across 2006 and 2007 after being elevated from the Swans’ rookie list at the start of 2006. He was delisted at the end of 2007 after playing one AFL game that season.

Power Football Operations Manager Peter Rohde says the club is thrilled to gain the services of the elusive midfielder.

“Simon had a very good season for Norwood and was very impressive in their recent finals campaign,” Rohde said.

“He is lightning quick, can carry the football and has demonstrated an ability to kick goals at important times as well.

“Importantly we see Simon as a person of great character and we think he will fit in very well within the culture of our playing group.”

The Power will take six picks - 16, 34, 35, 51, 68 and 85 - into November’s NAB AFL Draft.
