Star recruit Ashleigh Woodland landed at Alberton Oval on Thursday as one of Port Adelaide’s priority signings ahead of Season 8.

The 24-year-old key forward is expected to add some pizzazz to the Power’s forward line, joining forces with the likes of Erin Phillips and Gemma Houghton.

Woodland is excited to make the move, and to re-join some of her former Adelaide teammates.

“I’m just really excited to go to a developing side in SA,” she said.

“I’ve played with a few of the girls here. I just (want) to be able to bring what I’ve learned in my journey so far. I’m excited to play for Port Adelaide.

“I love Flip (Phillips), Ange (Foley) and Juzzy (Mules). We've played together before so really excited to be back out on the field with them. It will feel like old times. And (I’m looking forward to) playing alongside Houghton and Flip in the forward line.”

Woodland was last calendar year’s league-leading goal-kicker and is hoping to do much of the same, while donning colours close to her heart.

“It’s pretty cool, I used to wear the black, white and teal all the time out on my skateboard and I used to try and wear it under my school uniform,” she laughed.

“I’m really excited to be putting on those colours again. (I just want to) play my game, play my role. I know what I can do but also just helping the young ones coming through the ranks, I think the knowledge and what I’ve learned so far on my AFL journey can really help some of the young girls.”

After spending three seasons at Adelaide, Woodland is grateful to the club and understands the grief that supporters feel when a player leaves.

“I’m very thankful for what the (Adelaide Football) club has done for me and I’ve made lifelong memories and friendships there but I’m very excited to start this new journey and can’t wait to be out on the track with the girls.”

In similar fashion to the men’s game, leaving a club for its cross-town rival, some may consider a ‘big deal’.

“I believe it is and the supporters think it is,” Woodland said.

“I think naturally people will be disappointed. When you fall in love with a player from your club, it’s probably hard to see them leave especially to the big rival. I’ve seen some of the Port Adelaide supporters (though) and I think they’re pretty excited.”

Woodland played in the inaugural AFLW Showdown last year and is feeling positive about switching sides for the next battle.

“I think it will be quite fun, I’m excited,” she said.

“Showdown's obviously big in SA so I’m excited to play one of those again. I’ll be on my friends (Sarah Allan) and (Chelsea) They're in the backline and they’re pretty good players so I think it will be a lot of fun and a lot of banter in the game.”
