PORT Adelaide’s coaching panel faces a tough week at the selection table as the fight for spots in Round 1 heats up.

As many as six players who played against the Saints on Saturday could be forced out of the team ahead of Sunday night’s clash with Carlton at Etihad Stadium.

The Power played a 24-man team against St Kilda, meaning at least two will need to drop out for Round 1.

Ken Hinkley confirmed key defenders Jackson Trengove and Alipate Carlile, and forwards Jay Schulz and Robbie Gray would be available for Round 1, meaning the squeeze for spots tightens.

Carlile and Trengove are both yet to play a competitive game in 2014, with young defenders Jack Hombsch and Tom Clurey impressing in their absence and sure to be considered when the team is picked later this week.

Hinkley said the side that played in the Power’s final trial game was getting close to his best 22.

“Anyone who played today (against Saints) is a chance to play in Round 1,” Hinkley said after the match.

“For Tom Clurey to stand up the way he did against Riewoldt was really impressive.

“Jarman (Impey) did some really strong things and I think the backline as a whole without Jacko and Bobby back there has been really good over the past few weeks.”

Paul Stewart suffered a calf injury against the Saints and is in doubt for Round 1. Andrew Moore, Aaron Young and Matt White all received knocks but are expected to be fit to face the Blues.

Port Adelaide will name a 25-man squad on Thursday at 6pm before trimming the team back to 22 at 4.30pm on Friday. Stay tuned to portadelaidefc.com.au for all the latest selection and injury news.
