PORT ADELAIDE co-captain Tom Jonas is expecting a huge response from his fellow skipper Ollie Wines in this weekend’s blockbuster Showdown with Adelaide.
Wines was quiet against the Western Bulldogs on Saturday night with 12 disposals and seven tackles, but Jonas says his value goes far beyond his on-field performance.
“He’s a really proud guy,” Jonas said at the Showdown press conference on Monday morning.
“He was hurting a bit after the game, but being a leader of the club, it goes beyond what he produces.
“He was disappointed in that, but he also gets out of his own individual game and helps others with theirs.
“I expect a massive response. He’ll be buzzing around the club helping others, but also working on his own game, and he’ll be eager to bounce back.”
Jonas says there will be some more pressure at the selection table ahead of this weekend’s Showdown, with the Magpies continuing their strong form in the SANFL over the past month.
The Magpies defeated North Adelaide by 42 points in torrential rain at Prospect Oval on Saturday afternoon, with Tom Rockliff (57 disposals), Justin Westhoff (37 disposals and three goals) and Sam Powell-Pepper (33 disposals) all dominating.
“It was an outstanding performance by the Maggies,” Jonas said.
“You saw what Rocky (Tom Rockliff) dished up, and Westy (Justin Westhoff) went back there and enjoyed kicking the Burley around.
“There is pressure for spots again which is great. Those boys will definitely be in-line for a recall, as well as the boys coming back from suspension.
“There will be some tough decisions to be made.”
The 28-year-old expects a strong response from his side against the Crows, and says the message to his group ahead of Showdown XLVII will be about sticking to the process.
“There is obviously a lot on the line in a Showdown,” Jonas said.
“Naturally there will be a little bit (of emotion) around. It’s about sticking to our processes and bouncing back after last week.
“Being a Showdown, it’s going to be a tough, contested game, which is what the Crows bring and what we will need to bring to beat them.”
