A six-goal final quarter from Port Adelaide secured victory over South Adelaide at Alberton Oval on Sunday, leaving the Magpies knocking on the door of the top five.

It was a close game up until three-quarter time, with both teams trading the lead, before the margin blew out in the last term and Port Adelaide celebrated a 28-point win.

Coach Tyson Goldsack was pleased with the team’s effort and maturity, sticking to the game plan and finding momentum to close out the game strongly.

Cody Szust was among Port Adelaide's best, collecting 18 disposals and three goals.

“I thought they had our measure for the majority of the first half,” he said.

“And then, again, we just kept to it, and that last quarter was well on our terms.

“We had a pretty clear detail of what we needed to do (in the fourth quarter) and sure enough, they went out there and they played the way that we needed to, which is a credit to the boys.”

Goldsack expressed how he was proud of the way the team was coming together, particularly after opening the season with three losses.

“We’ve got a really young list at AFL level, so the guys that are coming down, they’re 18 and 19-year-olds, a lot of them above 193 centimetres,” he said.

“They take time developing and finding their groove in the game, but it’s suddenly come together.

“Our top-up guys are having an impact, so it’s coming together nicely, without getting too far ahead of ourselves.”

Port started the first quarter forcefully, kicking the first four goals before South Adelaide wrestled back momentum to kick four uninterrupted goals of their own.

The Panthers continued to grasp control of the match during the second quarter with their frenetic pressure causing some scrappy play from the Magpies.

Hugh Jackson was solid in the midfield with 23 touches.

Jase Burgoyne, who played on the wing for the majority of the match, provided the home-team highlight of the quarter with a huge running goal from outside 50.

Goals were exchanged in the third term with Port kicking the first two before the Panthers responded with two of their own.

The stage was set for a tense finish before the Magpies exploded out of the blocks, kicking five unanswered goals, including a tricky one from Cody Szust, which was his third for the match.

Aidan Turner also found the goals as the final siren sounded, adding another six points to the scoreline.

Goldsack said he was happy with the development of some of the younger AFL-listed players on show today, namely Jase Burgoyne, Josh Sinn and Hugh Jackson.

Jase Burgoyne was exciting on the wing, kicking a huge goal from outside 50.

“Jase Burgoyne played on the wing which is different to where he usually plays,” he said.

“We were just kind of trialling him out there to see how he went and he was great, gave us great run.

“Sinn’s one where we’re just trying to get more games into him, he’s been really lean (on games over the last 12 months), so his development over the last couple of months has been strong.

“(Jackson) has been really solid… if you look back to where he started when he first got here he was a long way back, but this year, it’s almost just like he’s turning corners.”

Port Adelaide will head into a SANFL bye round next weekend before taking on North Adelaide on May 27 at Prospect Oval.
