EVEN afterone of the most dazzling individual displays seen at the Gabba in many seasons, understated Daniel Motlop was looking to deflect the attention from himself.

The smallforward’s smooth skills were on show on Saturday night as he booted acareer-best six goals to spearhead Port’s seven-point win over the Lions.

It was hisfirst game back after a five week absence with a broken collarbone, which alsocame on the heels of a dislocated ankle which has cruelled the first part ofhis 2007 season.

But allthat was quickly forgotten on Saturday night, with his sure hands, quick leadand stunning right boot causing the home team all sorts of defensive headaches.

However, Motlopsaid the credit for his performance lay elsewhere.

“It wasgood to come back and get a touch,” he said.

“We do alot of work behind closed doors with David Arnfield and the other medical staffand they keep you fit, so credit to them.

“To getback and kick a couple of goals was great.

“It’scertainly the most goals I’ve ever kicked in a game but we’ve got to back it upnext week or this week means nothing.”

Motlopkicked three goals in the second quarter, two in the third and one in thefourth as he out-pointed reliable Lion Jed Adcock as one of his threeopponents.

Among hismany highlights was a freakish effort in the second term that will surelycontend for the goal of the year.

Hemmed inon the left-hand boundary line on the Gabba’s Stanley St wing, Motlop somehow fashioneda right-footed banana kick on the run from the 50m arc that split the sticks.

How he gotthe power only Motlop knows, but the quietly spoken 25-year-old was not aboutto talk himself up.

“I’d justcome on off the bench and Shauny Burgoyne passed to me,” he said.

“It waspretty lucky, a bit of a fluke. If you do that every week it’s great, but thesethings happen once a year I reckon.”

His runningeffort from 55m from the right boundary line in the third term showed it was mostdefinitely no fluke.

Motlop saidPort were great right across the ground.

“It wasgood to get up. The backline was really good tonight, helping out Wakes withJonathon Brown.

“It was abit disappointing that they came back but we got over the line.

“[Peter]Burgoyne had plenty of possessions back there. You could go through the wholeteam so it was a bit disappointing at the end but we got the four points.

“It waspretty scary when the crowd gets going.”

Motlopacknowledged the next fortnight against the Western Bulldogs and West CoastEagles would be crucial for the eight-and-five Power.

“Hopefullywe get over them, but it’s going to be hard and we’ve got to concentrate on theBulldogs first,” he said.
