With his gut-busting style, Surj quickly became a fan favourite after establishing his position in the side in 2006. Recruited from South Fremantle, he was drafted at Pick 10 in the Pre-Season Draft of 2004. Surjan made his debut in Round 1, 2004, against Essendon at AAMI Stadium. He won a Rising Star nomination in Round 11 of 2006 in a game against Hawthorn in which he won 26 disposals. Jacob's older brother Erik Surjan, is an Australian decathlon champion and his younger brother Adam-Beau Surjan is a talented soccer player
