Ebert name to lead Port Adelaide again
Brad Ebert will captain Port Adelaide in the absence of skipper Travis Boak this weekend - following in the footsteps of his uncle Russell who last led the team in 1985.
Without skipper Travis Boak for this Saturday’s game, Brad Ebert will act as Port Adelaide' stand-in captain against the Sydney Swans.
He follows in the footsteps of his uncle, Russell Ebert, who retired as captain of the club in 1985.
Brad's father Craig is also a former player with the club.
“Russell congratulated me the other day and we had a quick chat about what the role means,” said Ebert.
“It’s a great honour to step and takeover as captain this weekend, it will be a good challenge for me and I’m excited.
“It’s great what Dad, Russell and my cousin Brett (Ebert) have been able to do in the past but now it is my turn to create my own way of going about things.”
Ebert’s first game as captain this week will see him lead the side against an in-form Sydney outfit.
Senior coach Ken Hinkley was supportive of Ebert, saying that he was the right man for the job.
“He is a Port Adelaide boy through and through and he’ll lead the club proudly, and in the right way too,” said Hinkley.
“The original decision to make Brad vice-captain was based on the fact that if something did go wrong, he is the absolute logical choice to stand up and lead this footy club, which he will do well.
“It is a great story: the Port Adelaide Football Club once again going to be led by an Ebert.”
The former South Australian under-18 captain is adamant that he will be able to step straight into the leadership role in Boak’s absence.
“After my second pre-season working with Travis and working with (former captain) Dom (Cassisi), I have been able to learn to grow and take the responsibility to step up,” he said. “It will be a good challenge but there are plenty of other leaders out there like Dom and Kane (Cornes) to help out during the game.”
