AHEAD of their meeting in Round 22 of the 2018 AFL Premiership
The Power came into the final at the MCG having finished seventh, after Essendon
Port had lost three of its last four games while Collingwood had won four of its last six and went in as red-hot
The Power started well enough, leading a tight first quarter by a goal after Jay Schulz, playing in his first final, marked and converted with his trademark accuracy.
The margin was extended to three goals in the second term after Magpie defender Heath Shaw threw Angus Monfries to the ground in the goal square, right in front of the umpire, immediately after Travis Boak
But the Magpies kept coming and the Power coughed up the lead in the third term with Dane Swan doing much of the scoring while playing as a forward.
Young stars Chad Wingard and Ollie Wines put the visitors back in front but the Pies snuck ahead again when Travis Cloke
A soccered goal to Boak and a snap by Wines seemed to kill off the home side’s spirit and the Power finished with a comfortable 24-point advantage.
Port had a lot of winners on the day with Kane Cornes racking up 28 disposals and five tackles, Cam O’Shea and Tom Logan having 25 and 24 touches and 14 and 10 marks respectively off
A qualifying final against Geelong was next, although the Power had already exceeded the expectations of many just by going from 14th in 2012 to finalist in 2013.
