CENTRAL DISTRICT’s Harry Grant won the 2023 Magarey Medal on Monday night but nine Port Adelaide players also polled votes.

Grant polled a total of 27 votes across the 18-game season to claim the SANFL’s award for the fairest and most brilliant player as voted by the umpires.

After each match, the three field umpires awarded 3, 2 and 1 votes to the players they regarded the best, second best and third best on ground respectively.

The votes are tallied at the end of the minor round to determine the year’s Magarey Medallist.

Jase Burgoyne, Trent Dumont and Jackson Mead shared the honours of getting the most votes for Port Adelaide with eight each. Mead’s effort was perhaps the most impressive given he played just 12 SANFL games in the home-and-away season, while Dumont played all 18 and Burgoyne 15.

Mead’s votes all came between rounds 12-18 while Burgoyne impressed the umpires between rounds 9 and 14.

Experienced winger/defender Riley Bonner had a mid-season purple patch to rack up six votes while second-year midfielder Hugh Jackson also did well to finish with five votes.
