- Logan Austin celebrates debut win
KEN HINKLEY offers his thoughts following the Power's 67-point demolition of Collingwood at the MCG.
On the win
“It was pretty consistent throughout the four quarters…we’ve had some good games, there’s no doubt about that, but we’ve been too inconsistent. But it [today] was up there with one of our good performances.
“I said a few weeks ago, we’re sort of at the corner, and we’re having a look around the corner – we’ve just got to be convinced that we’re going around the corner.”
On the forward line
“There’s no doubt they all bought some energy to the team. Jake, we’ve really trusted up in the front half for a long time now – he’s just growing.
“We drafted Impey thinking he could play back, forward and in the midfield…he’s got some flexibility. We’ve played him probably 35 times in the backline and he’s done some pretty big jobs for us. He’s certainly shown he can play in the forward line. I think he’ll find at some stage he’ll drift into midfield.”
On Charlie’s game
“I thought the big full forward (Dixon) was special. He didn’t hit the scoreboard, but I said to the boys in the room, this is nearly the best game he’s played for us this year. The small boys – Jakey, Jars and Chad, Youngy – they all hit the scoreboard in a big way, but I think a lot of that came off the back of his work.
“I thought it was an outstanding game by Charlie - a really strong performance. He’s big, he gets held onto…he doesn’t get much help from a free kick point of view, but he gets the ball to ground.”
On Logan’s debut and the backline
“Have a look at our backline at the moment – I said in the rooms, potentially that could have been our Magpies backline bar one or two boys at the start of the year...it just goes to show that if you stick together and play a role as a group – that unit in the backline have done that well, and size hasn’t really hurt us….Loges today did a really good job, first up.
“It is bit of a risk (putting a debutant on veteran forward Travis Cloke) – but he’s a full back in the Magpies and he plays week in week out on the best forwards there and when you come up, if you’re going to make it as a tall back in the AFL, you’ve got to play on the good players.”
Looking forward
“Our next challenge is to win next week. We don’t look at the ladder as much, because every game is tough, every game is hard to play and every game is hard to win, but whoever we play we just want to perform at our best, and next week is a great opportunity, purely by the ladder, to beat a side who is quite high on the ladder – so we take that opportunity and see how we go.
“I hope all our fans turn up. We sort of dropped away a bit because we haven’t been consistent for them…I’d like them to have been watching us over the last couple of weeks saying, ok, were coming to watch you play and fill up Adelaide Oval next week.”
