Motlop had 26 possessions – with 100 per cent efficiency – as he rebounded from defence. He fought off strong opposition for the award, with Nick Lower putting in another blinder for Norwood.
The award is judged by Power development coaches, Darren Trevena and Stuart Cochrane, and is announced exclusively at PortAdelaideFC.com.au each week.
With several injuries on the Power list, it was a slightly quieter week in the SANFL, but there were several other strong performances among the 15 Power players who played across the weekend. The full wrap is below.
Cibo Glenelg SANFL Player of the Week
Marlon Motlop (for North v Norwood @ the Parade) – Marlon had 26 possessions and didn’t waste a single touch on the night, which would be close to a record for our young players. Used the ball really well playing a sweeper role across half back and set up a lot of play for the Roosters.
Daniel Stewart (for North v Norwood @ the Parade) – Played up forward and in the ruck, starting very well with a couple of goals and some damaging possessions. Just needs to turn that performance into a four quarter effort and we’ll start seeing the best of what he can do.
Nick Lower (for Norwood v North @ the Parade) – Another very good game with 35 possessions, a lot of them being won at stoppages. Used his bigger body well and looked comfortable in the midfield.
Jonathon Giles (for Central v South @ Elizabeth) – Gilesy played up forward more than he has in previous weeks and although he was competitive, he probably missed some good marking opportunities. That’s to be expected considering he’s not played much up forward. Had a bit of an influence in the ruck too.
Matthew Westhoff (for Central v South @ Elizabeth) – Matty had a great first half, presenting well and marking strongly. Kicked 2.4 in the first half but couldn’t back it up with a good second half. Finished with 3.4 and if he can put a four quarter effort together he’ll be putting pressure on the Power side.
Nick Salter (for Eagles v Port @ Alberton) – Salts played full forward and presented strongly early, but when the game clogged up it made it difficult for him to find any space and was often outnumbered when the ball was bombed in. Still managed 2.1, 9 kicks, 3 marks and 3 handballs before he unfortunately went off with a knee injury in the final quarter.
Paul Stewart (for Eagles v Port @ Alberton) – Stewie’s first half was exceptional; he had the ball on a string, ran hard both ways and set up a lot of play for the Eagles. He was pulled deeper in the second half and didn’t have as much impact because it was a more defensive role. Still kept his opponent quiet and finished with 17 kicks, 11 handballs and 11 marks.
Matthew Broadbent (for Eagles v Port @ Alberton) – Broady had a good game rotating through the midfield and defence. Did all the basics well, running hard, tackling hard and applying good defensive pressure. Very workmanlike game and we’d just like to see him get a bit more of the ball. Finished with 15 kicks, 8 handballs and 4 marks.
Danny Meyer (for Glenelg v West @ the Bay) – Danny had 26 possessions and had some great run from half back, as well as some really good hard ball around stoppages. Also did a good defensive job on his opponent.
Jason Davenport (for West v Glenelg @ the Bay) – Got plenty of the footy with 30 possessions and 2 goals and although he wasn’t quite as damaging as we’ve seen, he almost got Westies across the line with his hard ball gets..
Matthew Martin (for West reserves v Glenelg reserves @ the Bay) – A much improved effort this week, limiting his opponent’s influence on the game. Didn’t have a lot of the ball but when he does have it, he’s got a lovely long kick. He’s been given the kick out duties which shows how much West rate his kick.
Jesse Laurie (for West reserves v Glenelg reserves @ the Bay) – Jesse had a good game, racking up 23 possessions across half back. Linked up very well, rebounded from defence and gave his opponent nothing.
Glenn Dawson (for Eagles reserves v Port reserves @ Alberton) – Glenn played on the wing and up forward, making a good impact early in the game. Kicked three goals when he was moved forward but faded out of the game later.
Jarrad Redden (for Eagles reserves v Port reserves @ Alberton) – Had a good ruck contest against Matty Lobbe before he was moved forward where he took two marks and kicked two goals. He then rolled his ankle at the next marking contest and didn’t take any further part in the match.
Matt Lobbe (for Port reserves v Eagles reserves @ Alberton) – Played predominantly in the ruck and did some nice tap work. Unfortunately the Port midfielders didn’t make the most of his good work. A solid game but needs to keep improving.
