Keys to victory

Port Adelaide’s third terms have been winning ones this year - with seven out of nine premiership quarters seeing the Power finish on top of their opponents. The club has only won a sole second quarter however and this has been a sticking point so far in 2012. With a number of players coming into form, including Travis Boak, Danyle Pearce and Kane Cornes in a tagging role, as well as emerging play makers Matthew Broadbent and Brad Ebert continuing to provide grunt in the midfield, Port is perhaps best placed in terms of side-stability and team-wide confidence to give premiership contenders Carlton a run for the four points.

Walking wounded
After early season injuries to Robbie Gray, Chad Wingard and Jay Schulz, Port Adelaide is in the fortunate position of having no injuries during the past fortnight. Coupled with the return of Schulz and Wingard and promising young mid-forward Aaron Young set for a fitness test after an ankle injury, the Power could have one of its strongest sides of the year front up to AAMI Stadium on Saturday night. John Butcher has been ruled out from the clash with the Blues with a continuing hip complaint.

A rain of goals
Port Adelaide’s eleven individual goal scorers was instrumental to its win against the Suns on the Gold Coast last weekend. With the likes of Travis Boak (3 goals), Kane Cornes, Matt Broadbent, Brad and Brett Ebert (2 each) contributing up forward - coach Matthew Primus would have been thrilled to see the midfield finally contribute to Port’s score in a significant way. Carlton’s defence has been compromised by the potential omission of Jarrad Waite and Lachie Henderson and so the onus will again by on a positive contribution from Port’s forwards and mids.

Key match-ups

Kane Cornes v Chris Judd

For the past fortnight coach Matthew Primus has employed the tagging skills of Kane Cornes on the stars of North Melbourne and Gold Coast - Brent Harvey and Gary Ablett. His ability to shut down these prolific ball winners saw his return to his old role applauded by pundits. The chances of Cornes being employed on Carlton captain and Brownlow Medallist Chris Judd are high. Judd continues to perform well for the Blues through the midfield and the importance of stopping him in winning the uncontested ball will be important. If he improves on his recent form, Cornes will make Judd earn every touch.

Brent Renouf v Robbie Warnock/Matthew Kreuzer

Brent Renouf took most of the ruck contests for the Power against the Gold Coast and emerged with over 42 hit outs. This week’s selection will be interesting when it comes to picking a support for Renouf against the double-team of Robert Warnock and Matthew Kreuzer. Both are good rucks and Renouf will need to find support around the ground from the likes of Justin Westhoff and Jackson Trengove. This matchup will be a particular challenge for the Power selection committee to handle.

Jay Schulz v Michael Jamison

Jay Schulz was quiet against the Suns (kicking one goal from six scoring shots) but still managed to find the ball easily against the Gold Coast’s Matthew Warnock. Schulz kicked seven against the Roos last time the Power played home and he will be looking to replicate that effort against Jamison - who will have a hard time of it against Port’s forwards with a weakened defensive line up - look for Carlton to play a loose man down back to supplement their stocks.

The History

Port Adelaide’s history against Carlton is one which has evened over the last few years with the improvement of the Blues into a top six side coinciding with Port Adelaide’s rebuilding phase. The Power still leads Carlton 12-9 however and with some stirring performances like Warren Tredrea’s 8 goal haul in 1998 and Peter Burgoyne’s after-the-siren major to seal the deal in 2000 - there have been some classic minor round clashes that have gone Port Adelaide’s way. A new breed of Power player will look to back it up again this week.

Final word

Port Adelaide has a fantastic chance to take a massive scalp in front of a big Saturday night home crowd - with its midfield hitting some form at the right time during the last fortnight.
