CONSISTENT midfielder Will Snelling has been awarded the A.R. McLean Medal as Port Adelaide’s best and fairest in the SANFL for 2018.

Snelling finished 21 votes clear of Jack Trengove and 38 ahead of Jimmy Toumpas, who was third in the voting.

The 21-year-old polled votes in 15 of the Magpies’ 18 games, including two best on ground performances, to claim his first A.R McLean Medal in front of more than a thousand people at the Adelaide Convention Centre.

He was also the club’s best vote getter at the Magarey Medal count last month.

Snelling played all 18 SANFL games in 2018, one of just four players to do so for the Magpies, and his consistency proved telling.

“It’s been a good year for me, I’ve gained a lot of confidence through my performances,” he said.

“I’m still at a young age so I think I’ve still got a lot ahead of me.

“It’s a huge honour to win this award and I wouldn’t be up here without a lot of key people in my life – it’s a culmination of all of their work.”

Snelling also won the Fos Williams Memorial Trophy as the most dedicated player, capping a strong season.

Trengove could count himself unlucky to miss out given he played just 13 games for the Magpies but he was awarded the Anthony Williams Memorial Trophy as the most consistent player.

Retiring captain Steven Summerton claimed the Bob Clayton Memorial Award recognising him for his service to the club’s SANFL operations and for demonstrating Bob Clayton’s qualities of being positive, honest, trustworthy, loyal and committed.
