Dear Members,
It’s important to address the offensive homophobic slur Jeremy Finlayson made to an Essendon opponent during Friday night’s game at Adelaide Oval.
Without question, Jeremy made a significant mistake and has taken full responsibility for his actions and expressed his remorse immediately.
Today, both the club and Jeremy accepted the AFL findings and subsequent sanction of a three-game suspension.
The club has taken immediate steps to provide education and counsel to Jeremy, our playing group, and staff. We will also provide support to Jeremy and his young family.
We do not underestimate the seriousness of this matter and look forward to the AFL applying consistency to future cases.
I’d like to reiterate that the club does not condone this behaviour, and slurs of any nature do not have a place in football, or in the community.
Port Adelaide is and will always be a place for everyone.
Importantly, I would like to sincerely apologise to the Essendon player, the LGBTQIA+ community, Port Adelaide partners, our members and supporters, and anyone hurt by the comment made.
Regards,
Richo
