Yartapuulti midfielder Jasmin Stewart has admitted to getting emotional after seeing her design for the club’s First Nations guernsey come to life.

Yartapuulti released the guernsey on Monday to launch the AFLW’s Indigenous Round.

Stewart blended artwork created by her late grandfather into her design, which pays tribute to the story of her Nan who was taken forcibly from her family as a child as part of the Stolen Generation.

Speaking to launch the round at Grange Beach, Stewart explained the design, spoke about the team’s historic four-game winning streak and whether she had expected to see so much improvement in the side before the season started.

Jasmin Stewart explaining her design of Yartapuulti’s 2024 AFLW First Nations guernsey:

“It's a representation of my grandfather. The snake was his totem, and a lot of the detail in the jersey is actually what he used in a lot of his art pieces. The blue at the top represents Caroline Pool, where my Nan was born. And over my shoulders is wrapping, which is the tree over Caroline Pool, which she was born under. Down the bottom, I've got a meeting place and my grandfather's signature, which I just really wanted to add to the jersey, just to put a lot of his art onto it, and on the back I've got 11 people, and that represents my nan's 11 kids, and my grandfather's brothers and sisters.

“I've got them on the snake to show that he's always with them, and they're always with him. On the collar, I've got written Ngadlu Yartapuulti, which means “We are Port Adelaide”, which is a really significant phrase that we've used within the club this year and it's really special, and holds a lot of meaning.”

Jasmin Stewart on what it means to be asked to design Yartapuulti’s 2024 First Nations Guernsey:

“It's really special. It's been such a privilege to be able to do this for the club, and the club do a great job of really celebrating our Indigenous culture, and they're really passionate about giving back, so to be able to do this for Port Adelaide is really, really special.”

Jasmin Stewart on her emotions after seeing the guernsey for the first time:

“I got actually quite teary seeing it printed and being able to hold it, it's obviously really a reflection of my family, specifically my family, and our story and where we've come from. So being able to see it and hold it was a really big moment for me.”

Jasmin Stewart on the emotions she’ll feel when seeing the team running out in the guernsey:

“(Running out wearing the guernsey will be) really, really special. It's my story, and it's my family's story, and it all started from where my Nan was born to me, one of her great grandchildren, and she's got great, great grandchildren so there's a huge storyline there. It's going to mean the world.”

Jasmin Stewart on the reaction from her family to the guernsey design:

“I have shown them. I've got my Nan and Pop actually coming down for the game, and I'm going to talk them through it, and hopefully show them in person, but who I have been able to show over the phone and explain to them, it's been a really special experience, and I think everyone's really proud. It's been really nice to reflect on my family and our connections and the whole the whole experience has just been amazing.”

Jasmin Stewart on the mood in the camp after a historic four straight wins:

“We're obviously pretty happy with four in-a-row but we need to attack each week as it comes and stay focused on the next task. Obviously, the energy after those games is huge, and we very much enjoy the win, but I think come Monday, you know, we're ready to analyse the next game and go through what we need to do to get the win.”

Jasmin Stewart on whether the side’s form has surprised her:

“At the start of the year, your goal is to win games, so I think we had full faith that we were able to get a couple of wins on the board. This has obviously been a huge reward for effort of all the work we've done in the pre-season. So, it's nice to see it paying off.”
