Alberton Oval is set to play host to a festival of women’s football on Friday night as the SANFLW State team does battle with a VFLW representative side for the first time.

State pride will be on the line when the two leagues face off in their inaugural meeting, eight years after their 2017 establishment.

Port Adelaide assistant coach Sam Virgo will support Croweaters coach Courtney Cramey with SANFLW League coaches Bruce Dawes (West Adelaide) and Talia Radan (Glenelg) also added as assistants.

There will also be some former Port Adelaide representation amongst the 26-player state squad announced on Monday with inaugural Power listed players Jade Halfpenny (Norwood) and Alex Ballard (Sturt) included.

Last year the SANFLW side beat the WAFLW team in Perth by 16 points.

And while there will be plenty of action on the field when the game gets underway at 6:30pm, Port Adelaide AFLW players and Adelaide Crows AFLW players will be on hand to conduct a free signing session between 5:45pm and 6:15pm.

There will also be plenty of activities for the kids.

The game is part of Gather Round with the men’s state team to take on the VFL state team in the Barossa a day later.

“To have both men’s and women’s State Teams take on the VFL and VFLW over one of the biggest weekends of footy in this State, is a fantastic outcome,” said SANFL Executive General Manager Football Matt Duldig.

“These matches provide a unique opportunity for us to showcase the best talent in the SANFL and SANFLW on a national stage over the Gather Round major event.

“Hosting the inaugural SANFLW v VFLW game at Alberton Oval, the home of AFLW matches for Port Adelaide, is also a terrific boost for women’s footy in this State.”

Admission to Alberton Oval on Friday night is free.

Two lucky patrons will be selected to participate in Kick for Tix during the half time break. The first person to kick a goal wins their choice of Gather Round AFL tickets to a game on Saturday at Adelaide Oval.
