PORT Adelaide has gone two-in-a-row after chalking up a massive 48 point win over the Gold Coast at Metricon Stadium, with multiple contributors across the park helping the side to a massive surge in the second half.

End Game

They say vengeance is sweet and Port Adelaide certainly relished the opportunity to give the Gold Coast some payback after going down to them at AAMI Stadium last year. The Power dominated the second half to score six goals off just 28 possessions. Top contributions from Travis Boak and Matthew Broadbent and Brad Ebert helped the Power overcome a tight start to the match and a late sequence of goals to the Suns, with the win laying a positive foundation for Saturday night’s match against Carlton at AAMI Stadium.

Quarter-By-Quarter

In his own words - Matthew Primus

“We’re striving to have good forward momentum for most of the game.”

“Our third quarter - probably everything we judge ourselves on - our contested stuff, our structure around stoppages - was beautiful and we were able to generate a lot of our forward play from around that.

“To be able to fight back and dominate the game for longer periods than we have was good for us.

“I’ve said all year that we’ve improved, statistic-wise we have improved from last year but that hadn’t reflected on the win-loss…we still have a lot of work to do, a lot of improving to do but I think people can see what path we’re going down and the improvement in how we’re playing.”

What it means

Port’s first third of the season has reaped a 3-6 result having shown flashes of promise against the likes of Essendon, Collingwood, Sydney and Adelaide and combining the execution of game plan and intensity in wins against St Kilda, North Melbourne and now the Gold Coast. Saturday’s win provided fans with the best insight into the way Port Adelaide wants to play its brand of football - controlling possession on the inside and out to set up the forward mix. The support from the midfield on the scoreboard and in offensive 50 truly highlighted the potential of Matthew Primus’ game plan with Port capable of netting big scores when midfielders help out.

The future

Port Adelaide plays three more games before the bye in Round 13 - home against Carlton and Hawthorn and then away to the Bulldogs at Etihad Stadium. With Carlton and Hawthorn struggling this week, it is an opportune time for the Power to play these highly rated sides. The return of John Butcher from a hip complaint within that time as well as emerging young midfielder Aaron Young will position the Power for a strong second half of the season.

Injury list

No injuries were reported from this game.

The Black and White

Port Adelaide’s SANFL side didn’t play as part of the league-wide by for the state clash against the WAFL. Key Magpies James Meiklejohn, Jeremy Clayton and Sam Gray donned the state colours against the Black Swans whilst Daniel Kulikowski captained the SA Under 20 side. The Magpies will play NEAFL Northern Conference club Morningside on the morning of the Power v Blues clash in a Foxtel Cup Quarter Final. Entry and parking is free for all spectators.
