Danyle Pearce showed his potential as an attacking weapon out of defence with a dominant display on the half back flank against Melbourne on Friday night.

Pearce was best on ground for the Power, rebounding forward from defence and racking up 33 possessions and 6 running bounces to go with his 6 rebound 50s and 6 inside 50s, showing just how much ground the No. 6 covered.

Travis Boak, Kane Cornes and Robbie Gray were among the other players who were best for Port Adelaide, with the midfield trio combining for 13 clearances.

Skipper for the night Boak was the most influential around the packs with 8 clearances and 15 contested possessions as he continues his impressive pre-season form.

Troy Chaplin was solid in defence playing without Alipate Carlile and, for much of the night, Jackson Trengove (finger). Chaplin was the only Power player to have 100% game time as he amassed 22 possessions at 86% efficiency.

Justin Westhoff was forced to spend time in defence with the absence of the twin towers and looked lively taking 9 marks.

Once again, John McCarthy made the most of his time on the ground, working hard for 13 possessions at 92% efficiency in just 39% time on ground.

Matt Thomas’s return to AFL ranks was seamless, with the hard man doing what he does best with 11 contested possessions and 6 tackles.

Darren Pfeiffer and Tom Jonas did their chances of promotion to the senior list no harm with workmanlike showings. Pfeiffer was strong around the packs for his 14 touches while Jonas used his 9 possessions at 89% efficiency - an impressive tally given he spent just 53% of the game on the ground after being used as a sub for the first half.

The Power’s dominance on the scoreboard was reflected in the possession count, with the home side racking up a massive 403 touches to Melbourne’s 273. The Power had 122 marks to Melbourne’s 75, with the hosts also going inside 50 46 times to the visitors 40.

Despite Melbourne’s dominance in hitouts (51-26), Port Adelaide had the upper hand in clearances (36-31).
