Rnd 18 SANFL wrap-up
A dominant performance as the lone ruckman for West has won Matt Lobbe his second Cibo Glenelg SANFL Player of the Week Award for season 2009.
Since moving to West Adelaide, Lobbe has relished the opportunity to play as the lone ruckman, with his incredible endurance meaning he’s able to ruck against two opposition ruckmen.
The award is judged by Power development coaches, Darren Trevena and Stuart Cochrane, and is announced exclusively at PortAdelaideFC.com.au each week.
Lobbe’s award was made all the sweeter after beating off strong competition from seven goal forward Matthew Martin, four goals from Brett Ebert and 31 possessions from Peter Burgoyne. The full wrap is below.
Cibo Glenelg SANFL Player of the Week
Matt Lobbe (for West v South @ Richmond) – He rucked all day against two opponents and was very impressive. He had some great second efforts at the stoppage at ground level and ran hard forward to get into some dangerous spots. He finshed with 9 kicks, 8 handballs, 5 marks, 7 tackles, 5 inside 50s and a massive 36 hitouts. A great hard running display from the big man.
Mitch Farmer (for South v West @ Richmond) – Mitch worked hard in a side that was getting beaten pretty convincingly, with some good spoils in the backline. He provided some good run at times before moving to full back in the second half on a bigger opponent and did a good job. Finished with 12 possessions and 7 tackles.
Nick Lower (for Norwood v Glenelg @ the Bay) – A good first half on the wing and half back before getting a slight corkie in the third – restricting his movement from that point. Still managed to rack up the ball with 23 possessions, 8 tackles and 1.2.
Josh Carr (for Glenelg v Norwood @ the Bay) – Very good game from Josh playing forward and on the ball and having a big impact in the fourth quarter when the game was on the line. His work at stoppages really got the Bays back into the game. Finished with 13 kicks, 14 handballs and 5 tackles.
Steven Salopek (for Glenelg v Norwood @ the Bay) – Sal was very good all day, running very hard both ways. He linked up well and used the ball by foot very well. He was probably a bit unselfish and could have finished with a few more goals. He was still running in the final quarter and finished with 21 kicks, 7 marks, 10 handballs, 4 tackles and 1.2.
Danny Meyer (for Glenelg v Norwood @ the Bay) – A good game across half back for the Bays. He probably still needs to have a bit more of an impact at the contest but we’re confident he’s got all the attributes to play at the highest level. Finished with 7 kicks, 6 marks, 8 handballs, 5 tackles and 1.1.
Daniel Stewart (for North v Sturt @ Prospect) – He looked a lot more confident this week leading up on half forward. He took some nice grabs but probably needs to convert some of his work into goals. Finished with 8 kicks, 7 marks, 2 handballs, 1 behind and 4 inside 50s.
Marlon Motlop (for North v Sturt @ Prospect) – Marlon played on half back and a bit at half forward and although he did some nice things, he’s still getting his fitness back after being out with an injury. He picked up 12 possessions, had 5 handball receives and 4 tackles.
Peter Burgoyne (for Port v Central @ Alberton) – A solid day for Peter, racking up 31 touches, 6 handballs and 6 tackles. We saw some good speed and defensive pressure and also shut down his opponent effectively. He really looked like he was working hard to be getting back into the AFL side. His best game for 3 weeks.
Brett Ebert (for Port v Central @ Alberton) – Ebo played in the midfield and up forward and came back with a really good attitude and showed a good work ethic. He had 18 kicks, 7 marks, 4 tackles and 4.2 in an impressive display. He worked well defensively and looked to have an impact whenever the ball was in his area.
Jackson Trengove (for Port v Central @ Alberton) – Jackson had a good game, with 18 possessions, 6 marks and 4 tackles. He keeps working on his defensive positioning in the contest. He continues to show real aggression at the contest and tries to intimidate his opponent with his physicality.
Jonathon Giles (for Central v Port @ Alberton) – Joffa played forward and a bit in the ruck. A solid game and had he kicked straighter (1.4) it could have been a much better game. He presented well throughout the day but needs to make a bit more of the marking contests he gets to.
Wade Thompson (for North reserves v Sturt reserves @ Prospect) – Wade played some desperate footy on the weekend, chasing hard and tackling well (6 tackles). He held the ball in well playing deep forward, which probably limited his scoring opportunities in a team that was getting beaten convincingly. He moved to the wing in the fourth quarter and had an impact, finishing with 12 possessions.
Matthew Martin (for West reserves v South reserves @ Richmond) – Matty had a good game – his best for the year – playing forward and booting 7 goals straight. He led up well and took some good contested marks and his second efforts were impressive. He looked dangerous every time the ball came forward. The challenge now is backing that performance up.
Jesse Laurie (for West reserves v South reserves @ Richmond) – After starting slowly, he worked his way into the game through his determination to run. He finished with 34 possessions, 8 marks and 0.2. He was good with his defensive pressure and just needs to finish his work with straighter kicking at goal.
Matthew Westhoff (for Central reserves v Port reserves @ Alberton) – Back in the reserves this week to work on a few things. We know he’s got the talent to play in the SANFL and even in the AFL, but he just has to work on a few basics of the game to get his confidence back (chasing, tackling defensive pressure). A solid game with 13 touches and a goal.
