The Port Adelaide Football Club has thrown its weight behind AAMI Stadium, following the State Government’s announcement of the deferral of the planned upgrade to the stadium.

Power chief executive Mark Haysman said the club was committed to maintaining the venue as the home of football in South Australia.

“AAMI Stadium is our home ground, we love playing there, and will continue to love playing there,” Haysman said.

“The planned upgrade of AAMI Stadium is very important to us. It is critical we have equal branding (with the Adelaide Football Club) at the stadium and an equal ‘land footprint’ there. The SANFL understand how important this is to our club and our supporters, and the upgrade is the means by which we can achieve this.

“However, the world is going through a financial crisis, and we see the challenges the State Government, and all levels of Government, are facing, so we understand the need to put it off for now.

“We also commend the SANFL for maintaining its investment in upgrading the stadium. Their commitment to upgrade transport and traffic access to the stadium for next year will be of great benefit to our supporters, and the new lighting in 2010 will really enhance the stadium.

“The AAMI Stadium surface remains an absolute premium playing surface that our players really appreciate. The club has also benefited from the SANFL’s multi-million dollar facilities upgrade in recent years, including a major extension of its changerooms.

“Talk of a new stadium in Adelaide is neither practically nor commercially viable, particularly given the latest economic times.

“With the SANFL continuing to spend and develop the stadium, and our ongoing work on improving our entire match-day experience for supporters, we will make sure that seeing the game live at AAMI Stadium is the only fulfilling way to experience a Power home game in 2009.”
