A FAST finishing Port Adelaide defeated West Adelaide by 31 points in the SANFL season opener, but coach Matthew Lokan said there was plenty still to work on.
A six-goal final quarter and brilliance from Jack Trengove and Sam Gray helped the Magpies overcome the Bloods 11.19 (85) to 8.6 (54) in a scrappy contest at City Mazda Stadium.
“I was very pleased after the game,” Lokan said.
“We had nine guys that played their first game for the footy club and to be able to dominate the statistics and scoreboard in the end was pleasing.
“We have certainly got some things to work on, we started the game well but we weren’t able to hit the scoreboard, it was a good way to finish (kicking 6.6 in the final quarter) and we will take it into next week against South.”
Trengove finished the match with 44 disposals, 11 tackles and a goal while Sam Gray had 33 disposals and four goals, including three in an explosive final term.
“They were the two most influential players on the ground,” Lokan said.
“They are two quality players that we do expect a lot from.
“The thing that I was pleased about were guys like Kai Pudney in his first game, Marty Frederick across half back was outstanding – they came from our Next Generation academy and to come out and have an impact at League level would be unfair to go unnoticed.”
In a pleasing sign for the senior coach Port dominated the key statistics, finishing with 58 more disposals, 21 more clearances and 16 more scoring shots.
Port will play the Panthers next Saturday afternoon at Alberton Oval.
