AHEAD of Robbie Gray’s 200^th AFL game on Saturday, he has been described as “unpredictable”, “dynamic” and a “superstar of the competition” by some of the people most in the know.

Portadelaidefc.com.au spoke with some of the AFL captains to ask them about Gray and what it is like coming up against him.

Fremantle Brownlow Medallist Nat Fyfe said he gets nervous coming up against him, Carlton’s Patrick Cripps described Gray as one of his hardest opponents and Brisbane skipper Dayne Zorko labelled him a game-breaker.

Phil Davis – GWS co-captain:

“I’m not ashamed to say Robbie is one of my top five favourite players in the competition. He’s shocking to play against because he’s so good. He’s hard to tackle, unbelievable goal sense and polish, he’s fiercely competitive but plays the game in the right spirit. I just love him and I’d love to play with him, unfortunately I don’t think he’s coming to Sydney any time soon.”

Trent Cotchin – Richmond captain:

“He’s got the attributes of all the most talented players in the competition but he does like to sneak forward. He’s very crafty around goal which makes him really tough to match up on because do you put a key defender or a smaller defender on him – he’s pretty good one-on-one.”

Patrick Cripps – Carlton captain:

“He’s actually one of the hardest players I’ve played on early in my career. He’s so dynamic around the stoppage – he’s really smart. I rate him among the best players in the AFL.”

Nat Fyfe – Fremantle captain:

“He’s so unpredictable as an opponent. He’s a genuine superstar of the competition that anyone who has to play on him gets nervous about.”

Dayne Zorko – Brisbane captain:

“He’s very difficult to play against. His ability to work in a phone box is unbelievable and it’s been a trait of his for many years. He’s such a game opener, like he can break the game open in two or three kicks, which is a serious asset of his.”

Scott Pendlebury – Collingwood captain:

“He’s tricky to play against. The way he moves is so efficient. He’s so good around stoppages. My battles with Robbie go back to the basketball court when we were growing up with Sale versus Bairnsdale back in the day when we were young fellas running around. He’s always been a special talent.”

Shannon Hurn – West Coast captain:

“Tricky, he’s very tricky! He’s always such a difficult player because he can play different ways, on the ground and if the ball comes in the air, he can take a really good mark. That’s what makes him such a good player and he understands the game so you know whenever you’re playing on him, you’re up for a challenge.”
