Footy Flashback – Round 1, 2013
Ahead of their meeting in Round 1 of the 2019 AFL Premiership Season we thought we would look back at one of the best clashes between Port Adelaide and Melbourne.
While the Power holds an impressive lead of 20 wins to 13 in 33 matches against the Demons, perhaps one of the more memorable wins came in the season opener in 2013, on Sunday 31 March, 2013.
Ironically Port Adelaide opens its season against the Dees for just the second time on Saturday, and at the same venue.
Going into 2013, there was an unknown element about the Power.
With new coach Ken Hinkley about to take charge of his first game, the club was reeling from a shocking 2012 which saw a huge amount of change at the club.
The Power players were also playing their first game since the death of teammate John McCarthy in the off-season and carried an extra bit of emotion as a result.
Port burst out of the blocks with the first 21 points of the encounter, before Melbourne finally hit the scoreboard.
By half time the margin was 29 points, with the Power not troubled by the wet weather.
The Power seemed fitter and faster than their opponents and pushed the margin out past ten goals at the final change, eventually finishing 79-point victors.
Hamish Hartlett was probably the Power’s best on the day with 29 disposals, five marks and two goals while Kane Cornes had 29 touches and nine marks to go with his goal, Brad Ebert had 30 disposals and 12 marks, while Jay Schulz finished with four goals, five tackles, six marks – one of them a mark of the year contender on the goal line -and 20 disposals.
Ollie Wines had 24 disposals, seven marks and a goal on debut to earn himself the Round 1 nomination for AFL Rising Star.
It was Port Adelaide’s second biggest win against the Dees, behind the 89-point drubbing the Power handed them in Rd 17, 2007 and the perfect start to Hinkley’s time at the club.
