REVIEWING the 2018 AFL season, today’s focus is on the club’s major mark takers.
Tom Jonas was a clear standout when it came to the question of who took the club’s most marks.
Despite only playing 18 of a possible 22 matches in 2018, Jonas took 24 more marks than his nearest competitor.
His 141 marks had him ranked ninth in the competition for marks, although he did lead the competition until he suffered an injury interruption in the second half of the season.
The 27-year-old averaged 7.8 marks per game, ranking him second behind only West Coast captain Shannon Hurn.
Jonas had a career-high 15 marks in the Round 5 loss to Geelong, continually repelling the Cats’ attacks.
He also had 10 or more grabs on six occasions including 13 when he had a career-high 30 disposals against West Coast in Round 21.
Dan Houston and Justin Westhoff each had 117 marks for the season to come in behind Jonas despite each playing every game in 2018.
Houston had a season-high nine marks against Carlton in Round 15 but was a consistent presence across half-back where he interrupted numerous attacks.
Westhoff’s grabs were spread across the field due to his versatility and ability to play in a variety of positions.
The veteran’s best marking game came in Round 1 when he took nine.
Brad Ebert and Jared Polec rounded out the club’s top five for marks.
