PORT ADELAIDE superstar Robbie Gray has confirmed he broke two bones in his hand in Friday night’s 16-point win over North Melbourne, and had surgery today.
Gray is expected to be sidelined for a month and the forward couldn’t pinpoint when and exactly how he suffered the injury.
“I couldn’t remember the actual incident,” Gray said at a SA Health press conference on Sunday morning.
“I thought it might have got stepped on but still not 100 per cent on how it happened.
“I came to the bench and the docs had a feel around and they knew something was wrong with it but I was able to play out the game.
“That happened early in the game on Friday and had some x-rays yesterday.
“I will have to go in and get it fixed up with surgery today.”
The 31-year-old says the thought of missing a month of football was frustrating but he has full faith Port can continue the momentum they have built in the first six rounds.
“The boys are in great touch and we are happy to be sitting 4-2 and hopefully we can keep that going,” he said.
“This is just a month out of footy hopefully and I’m sure the recovery will go well.
“There are a couple of big games. Trav’s 250th this week as well which is a big one for the club and I would’ve loved to be out there with him for that.
“I will travel over and hopefully the boys can put in a really strong performance.
“It’s a big month of footy coming up and it’s important for us. We’ve put ourselves in a really good position after six weeks.
“It’s an important month and I have full faith the boys will continue to do well.”
Gray - who recently kicked his 300th AFL goal - says there are a number of players who will be in contention to replace him for Friday night’s blockbuster against Collingwood at Marvel Stadium.
“The boys in the Magpies have been in really good form and they had another strong performance yesterday,” he said.
“I think there are a number of guys the coaches will look at.
“Mots has gone back the last couple of weeks and played some strong footy.
“Sam Mayes. Jack Trengove. Billy Frampton kicked five yesterday.
“There are a number of guys who can come in and play some strong footy, so I’m sure that won’t be a problem.”
Collingwood has won their previous three games while the Power are coming off two consecutive wins, with both sides sitting 4-2 heading into Round 7.
