AHEAD of the 2019 SANFL Statewide Super League Grand Final between Port Adelaide and Glenelg, portadelaidefc.com.au looks back at the most recent season-deciding encounters between the two sides.
Port Adelaide and Glenelg have enjoyed a rich rivalry in the SANFL competition over the years, with Sunday’s grand final set to be the seventh time the clubs have met in the premiership-decider.
Port holds a 5-1 advantage over the Tigers in grand finals, with victories in 1977, 1981, 1988, 1990 and 1992, with the Bays winning the first ever grand final meeting between the two sides in 1934.
In 1988, the Magpies triumphed to win a spiteful encounter against Glenelg by 29 points in front of 50,313 people at Football Park.
The Bays shot out of the blocks, kicking three goals to none in the opening quarter to lead by 19 points at the first break.
Port responded in emphatic fashion in the second term, booting four majors to turn a quarter-time deficit into a seven-point lead at the half.
The Magpies added another three goals in the third term - with Glenelg only managing one - to set up an exciting final term for the black and white army.
From that point, the Magpies never looked troubled, as they ran out 29-point winners.
Bruce Abernethy was awarded the Jack Oatey Medal for his silky performance on the half-back flank.
Scott Hodges stood tall in attack, booting four goals, while Tim Ginever and David Brown each kicked two.
Greg Phillips, Roger Delaney and George Fiacchi found plenty of the footy and provided a heap of run and carry, while young ruckman David Hynes played a pivotal role.
Port’s 1988 premiership was its third against Glenelg, and the 29th in the club’s history.
