YOU may recognise him as television’s most eligible bachelor, but when it comes to which AFL club he supports, The Bachelor’s Matt Agnew is already in a relationship.
Agnew was spoiled for choice in his search for love in the Bachelor mansion, but he never stood a chance when it came to pledging his love to Port Adelaide.
“I’m originally from Adelaide,” the 31-year-old astrophysicist told portadelaidefc.com.au.
“I was born here and lived here for the first 12 or 13 years of my life.
“Both my folks are SA-based and diehard Port supporters. Naturally that got me onto Port Adelaide.
“I’d been to a couple of games in the SANFL watching the ‘Pies (as a youngster), but when they joined the AFL, that’s when I really got on board.”
On the job searching for new planets has taken him as far as Berlin, Sweden and Buenos Aires, and despite now being based in Melbourne, Agnew has maintained his Port Adelaide membership over the years.
One of the downsides of being locked in a mansion with 28 beautiful women has been his inability to keep up with the Power this season, but he is excited to be able to track the club’s progress on the field again and watch his favourite player, Charlie Dixon, in action for the rest of the season.
“This year I was kind of removed and in a bubble away from everything for a significant period of time. Since getting out (of the Bachelor mansion) I’ve caught up on the games.
“I’m a big fan of Charlie Dixon. I think he’s got a lot of passion.
“There’s a certain cheekiness to his style that I love and I think would rub the opposition up the wrong way and I really like that.
Agnew admitted that on his search for true love the topic of AFL fandom was inevitably a focus of conversation, but he remained tight lipped on who his final rose was reserved for and diplomatic on whether the colour of their scarf was a deciding factor.
“A lot of the South Australian and Victorian women would have a team they support, so I’d always ask.
“It’s not a deal breaker by any means, but obviously I’d love someone to get on board the Port train with me.
“Having a bit of rivalry (in the relationship) and them following a different team can still be a bit of fun, or if they don’t follow an AFL team then that just means there’s room for me to influence who to barrack for.”
In the meantime, Agnew was looking forward to cuddling up on the couch with his lucky lady, whoever she may be, and cheering the Power on in the chase of September action.
