PORT ADELAIDE senior assistant coach Michael Voss said the effort was there for his side, despite a lapse in the final quarter against Fremantle.
Port were held scoreless in the final term, as the Dockers kicked three goals to win by 21 points at Optus Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
“We fought really hard throughout the game and our effort was really high,” Voss told SEN SA’s Breakfast program.
“The game was very much an outnumber game. Whoever was controlling the ground was generally giving the ascendency to their team.
“We were just outworked in the last quarter. We lost the territory battle and they were able to hit the scoreboard, and we weren’t able to hold that back.”
Voss was extremely pleased by the performance of returning vice-captain Hamish Hartlett, who racked up 23 touches and attacked the football with his usual vigour.
“To have him back was just fantastic,” he said.
“There are just some guys where people just walk taller around them. He is that type of player.
“He has a really strong presence. He has a great balance in the way that he talks and communicates with the players.
“We’ve missed him over a long period of time. He was in some really good form when he left us, and he certainly has picked up some really good form on the way in.”
The 43-year-old also praised the performance of Kane Farrell in just his 10th AFL game, but said there was still plenty for the young left-footer to work on.
“We’ve always known his kicking skills have been fantastic,” Voss said.
“You only have to look at the stats this year around finishing and it’s a competition-wide issue right now, so to have players who can work the arc and find the ball inside 50 is a nice weapon to have.
“He can finish as well. He has some things that he needs to work on his game, but finishing isn’t one of them. He’s exceptional in that area.”
Voss had an update on Ollie Wines, Charlie Dixon and Brad Ebert - who returned to football after a six-week absence - who all performed strongly in the Magpies’ 45-point victory over Norwood on Sunday.
“They were all pretty strong,” he said.
“It’s going to be a good conversation in match committee around selection, that’s for sure.
“They are all certainly putting their hard up, and there are a couple of other guys - Willem Drew and Garner have been playing really well.
“You can’t leave Ladhams out of that conversation as well because he’s had such a strong season. They are all playing really good footy - it’s a good problem to have.
“We are hoping with the injection of these guys that they bring a fresh level of energy for us. They are obviously very important players for us.”
