PORT ADELAIDE senior coach Ken Hinkley says he was pleased to back up last week’s win in Perth with another one against North Melbourne on Friday night.
Hosting its 16th consecutive ANZAC Round clash, Port held off a determined Kangaroos outfit by 16 points at Adelaide Oval.
Hinkley says it was an important win for the club to keep some momentum going in the early parts of season 2019.
“When you get through and you win - backing up after the Perth game as well, it was a significant performance,” Hinkley said at his post-match press conference.
“We sit here today 4-2 - I’m not sure there would be many people saying that at the start of the year.
“We’d love to be 6-0 but we understand how hard the contest and how hard the games can be.”
The Power conceded the last five goals of the game, and Hinkley says that was more about missed opportunities and the way the Roos played than taking the foot off the gas.
“We had numerous opportunities again in the last quarter and to North Melbourne’s credit they were going for it,” he said.
“They didn’t come over here to have a close loss I wouldn’t have thought with the week they were faced with so they really challenged us for a period in the last quarter.
“But I think we had enough opportunities ourselves.
“We could sit here and be a little critical of our finish being 2.6 rather than 5.0.
“I just didn’t think we finished as well as we should have - we kicked a number of points again.”
The senior coach was full of praise for small forward Sam Gray for his four-goal performance, as well as, key defender Dougal Howard.
“Boaky won the medal - a worthy winner - but Grub (Sam Gray) was pretty close I reckon,” Hinkley said.
“He was pretty close, and Dougal was really strong for us.
“With Jonas out, that was significant from the backline.”
The Power will fly to Melbourne next week to face Collingwood in another Friday night blockbuster in Round 7.
