REVIEWING the 2018 AFL season, today’s focus is on the club’s major goalkickers.
Robbie Gray was a clear standout when it came to the player who kicked the most goals.
His 36 goals, while club leading, was well down on his 47 in 2017, and fairly representative of the club’s overall drop in scoring.
However, Gray’s overall scoring of 1.7 goals per game is up on his career average of 1.5.
Gray missed Round 1 through suspension but played every other game, although his scoring was often limited by him spending time in the midfield where he is just as damaging with his uncanny ability to win clearances and find space and time amid the congestion.
His 2018 goal haul saw him ranked 15th for goals in the competition, nearly 30 behind the overall leader Jack Riewoldt.
The three-time John Cahill Medallist claimed his second club leading goalkicker award, after his 2011 success, with his 2018 season including a career-high haul of six goals against Adelaide in the Round 8 Showdown.
His performance in that game, which included five goals in the third quarter, saw him claim his third Showdown Medal and he earned a fourth when he backed up his showing with another four goals in the return match in Round 20.
He also booted four goals against Hawthorn in Round 11 and three each against the Western Bulldogs (Round 13) and Carlton (Round 15).
Charlie Dixon was the Power’s next best for goals with 26, well down on his club-leading 49 in 2017.
The evergreen Justin Westhoff, the silky Chard Wingard, and small forward Sam Gray rounded out Port Adelaide’s top five goalkickers.
