THE AFL fixture for 2019 is to be released tomorrow and we already know that Port Adelaide will get its season underway at the MCG against Melbourne.

We also know the Power will play St Kilda in Shanghai on Sunday 2 June at Adelaide Arena at Jiangwan Stadium.

While we don’t know what else awaits, we have gone back over the 2018 fixture to determine what timeslots saw the club have the most success, and which fixtures attracted the biggest crowds.

An average of 38,227 people attended Port Adelaide’s 11 home games in 2018, up from 38,136 in 2017, making the club one of nine in the competition to record an increase in average home game attendance.

It was the club’s fourth highest average attendance figure ever.

As the table below indicates, Port Adelaide had the best success on Thursday nights, although it played just one Thursday night game against the Western Bulldogs for a comfortable 57-point win.

Port lost just one of three Friday night games – against Essendon in Round 23 – but averaged nearly 40,000 in attendance, while the Power’s sole Saturday night game – against Geelong in the Round 5 ANZAC Round game – attracted more than 45,000 people.

In 2018 Port played seven Saturday afternoon games for four wins and three losses and only one of those was at home.

The club hosted four of its five Saturday twilight games (the other being the away Showdown to Adelaide) and managed a 60% winning rate.

Sunday afternoon proved less successful with just one win in three games and average crowds of just 23,500. These included trips to much smaller capacity venues in Shanghai and Ballarat and the Round 3 meeting with Essendon at the now Marvel Stadium.

Sunday twilight games pitted the Power against the two Sydney-based teams with a 50% win-rate.
