AHEAD of their meeting in Round 15 of the 2018 AFL Premiership Season we thought we would look back at one of our favourite clashes between Port Adelaide and Carlton.

The Power went into the Round 7 game in 1998 having started the season with three wins and three losses and was missing key forward Scott Cummings for the second game in a row after he was suspended.

The Power had heavily relied on Cummings to that point, with the big forward having booted 70 goals in 1997 and 12 goals in five games in 1998 to that point.

In his place, a young Warren Tredrea, who would go on to captain the side some years later, stood tall.

To that point, Tredrea had played seven AFL games and had kicked seven goals, but it was against the Blues where he had a break-out game and ensured the football world knew his name.

While the game was tight in the first half with just 11 points separating the sides, the shackles were let off after the main break as Port Adelaide kicked nine goals in the third term and another six in the final quarter – a 15-goal second half to Carlton’s three.

The small crowd at Princes Park was left shell-shocked as the Power recorded its highest score and its biggest win to that point.

Nick Stevens and Brayden Lyle dominated in the midfield and in the absence of Cummings Port’s young forward line was brilliant.

Danny Morton, Josh Francou, and Bowen Lockwood had three goals each, Paul Evans, Nathan Eagleton and Chris Naish chipped in with two each as well, while for Carlton Brad Pearce managed five goals as well.

But it was Tredrea’s eight goals from 22 disposals and 17 marks that made the real difference.

In just his second season in the big league, Tredrea was marking strongly, leading well and kicking accurately.

Unfortunately for him and the side, just as he was considering whether he might bag ten for the day he fell and dislocated his knee, leaving him sidelined for five weeks.
