ENERGY and effort are the keys to Port Adelaide’s on-field success according to Magpies coach Chad Cornes.

Port Adelaide was victorious over Adelaide with a splendid 58-point win helping to ease the pain of last weekend’s loss to Woodville-West Torrens.

Cornes and his team spent last week reviewing the loss to the Eagles, and said the review  helped improve the side’s performance against the Crows.

“Both the AFL and the SANFL had a really good review meeting it was really honest and the boys really learnt from that,” Cornes said.

“The first half wasn’t perfect in terms of our skill, but our energy and effort was, you could tell the boys were on from the first quarter, when we come to play the rest usually takes care of its self.

“We rectified a few things at half time, the way we use the ball going forward and for the boys to break it open in the last quarter like they did it was really positive to finish of a term like that.”

Players who excelled were Billy Frampton who got a taste of the forward line and kicked three goals and Peter Ladhams who kicked two goals.

“I though Billy [Frampton] and Lobbe had really impressive games, Ladhams keeps showing bits and pieces, he has a real X-factor about him,” Cornes said.

Maintaining energy was a big focus for Cornes and he was pleased with Port’s efforts - particularly its final quarter surge where they kicked 7.1 to the Crows’ 1.1.

“It was an important win,” he said.

“If we didn’t win, it would have put us right back in the mix. The Eagles are a couple of games clear now and to hold that second spot is important.”

“There are definitely things to improve our whole ground defence the Crows got through a little too easy at time especially in the second quarter.

“We got our hands to a lot of balls in marking contests and dropped them so we can fix that up.

“Once we get those things right heading into finals we’ll be a pretty hard team to stop.”

Port Adelaide heads to Elizabeth to take on Central District on Saturday 11 July at 2.10pm.
