A PORT ADELAIDE-produced documentary will showcase the work of the Power's Aboriginal programs team on Channel Seven Adelaide this Sunday.
Power Dreaming was produced in partnership with 57 Films and follows the club's work in the remote APY Lands and across metropolitan Adelaide.
It also tells the stories of Power player Nathan Krakouer and Aboriginal AFL Academy captain Elijah Satala.
“The key philosophy with all our Aboriginal community programs here at Port Adelaide is to close the gap for Aboriginal people,” Port Adelaide's Aboriginal programs manager Paul Vandenbergh says.
“When we refer to close the gap it is about providing pathways and opportunities for Aboriginal people so that they too can enjoy the same standard of living as every other Australian.
“This relates to a range of social issues from education outcomes for young Aboriginal people to child mortality rates to disproportionately high levels of incarceration in Australian prisons.
“These are just the tip of the iceberg and for Australia to become a better country we need to close the gap for Aboriginal people.”
Vandenbergh says the story of Krakouer's story is particularly compelling.
“This documentary is very powerful and both confronting and uplifting throughout. As an Aboriginal man trying to find his feet in the AFL Nathan has had many challenges to overcome and he speaks incredibly honestly about his battles," Vandenbergh says.
“Similarly, Elijah has had a very difficult start to his young life but with the help of his family, Nathan and our club’s Aboriginal Programs he is developing into an outstanding person.
“Their stories are similar to what confront many Aboriginal people every day across all our communities. This documentary will shine a light on those social issues and I’m hopeful it’ll inspire conversations that will help us close the gap for Aboriginal people.”
Power Dreaming will screen on Channel 7 Adelaide before the free-to-air debut of its 2016 documentary 'INSIDE' at 12.30pm on Sunday 25 September.
