- - 1 in 4 women have experienced physical or sexual violence from a current or former partner since the age of 15.
- - 1 in 5 women experience sexual violence including rape
- - 1 in 4 women experience emotional violence.
- - 1 in 3 women experience physical violence.
- - More than half of the women who experience physical violence had children in their care when the violence occurred.
These are damning statistics that make up a significant part of Australia’s challenge of tackling domestic violence in all of its forms.
November 25 marks the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and Port Adelaide’s community team has been working hard to help educate young men in South Australia about the importance of healthy and positive relationships.
The Power To End Violence Against Women is run by Power Community Ltd in conjunction with Centacare Catholic Family Services and the Government of South Australia.
Along with program ambassador Gavin Wanganeen and Port players like Travis Boak, Matt White and Ollie Wines, the program worked with high-school students in 21 metropolitan and regional schools in South Australia.
Over 1500 males in Year 10 were part of the program in 2016 – signalling a strong start to the club’s latest in-school educational program.
Our Watch #NoExcuse4Violence
As part of a global 16-day initiative to raise awareness about domestic violence, Port Adelaide is one of many AFL partners to support Our Watch’s #NoExcuse4Violence campaign.
Our Watch is a national initiative to end violence against women and their children and promote gender equality in Australia.
Power captain Travis Boak kicked off the club’s support on Friday.

Port Adelaide will continue pursuing a gender equality agenda through its community programs.
At Friday’s White Ribbon campaign breakfast, youth programs manager Ross Wait and senior youth programs coordinator Jake Battifuoco were made White Ribbon Ambassadors.
As part of their ambassadorship Wait and Battifuoco will stand up, speak out and act against male violence against women, actively promote gender equality and engage other men in the prevention of violence against women.
