PORT ADELAIDE’S community development coordinator Lisa Kennedy has won the Emerging Leader Award as part of the AFL’s Football Woman of the Year awards.
The young achiever accepted the award at the Liptember 2016 Grand Final Comedy Debate in Melbourne on Thursday afternoon.
Kennedy works as part of the Power’s community youth team, which delivers the Community Youth Program, Empowering Youth, Power to be Positive and a number of other initiatives for young people in South Australia.
Her nomination for the award comes on the back of her significant contribution to the club’s youth programs, and female programs, as well as playing and coaching for the club’s women’s team in the SA Women’s League.
Port Adelaide’s senior youth programs manager Ross Wait says Kennedy’s win is a testament to her passion for working with young people.
“Lisa exemplifies the values of the Port Adelaide Football Club of being brave and bold, a challenger who has a never give up attitude,” Wait says.
“These values are all evident with the hard work that she contributes to Power Community Limited in her role as Program Coordinator for the Empowering Youth program, as coach of the Port Adelaide Football Club women's under 18 team and as a leader of the senior women's team.”
As part of the Empowering Youth program, Lisa has taken the opportunity to provide leadership to young people from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Most recently, she combined her experience as a reservist with the Australian Army with her day-to-day work by taking Empowering Youth students to RAAF Edinburgh.
There she helped bring the students through a challenging day of facing a military obstacle course and an introduction to the practices and technology used by Australia’s defence forces.
“Lisa is a fantastic role model for young women and young people in the community, who demonstrates hard work, determination and integrity in all that she does,” Wait says.
“Lisa also contributes to the community as she serves as a member of the Royal Australian Military as a Reservist.
“Lisa is extremely passionate about the Port Adelaide Football Clubs women, team one day competing in the national competition and hopes to be involved as a player, coach or administrator.”
Congratulations to Lisa on behalf of the Port Adelaide community - the club is extremely proud of you!
