1. Quarter fades are hurting
One-quarter fadeouts have hurt the Magpies in each loss this season. The Magpies led by two points at half time on Saturday, but didn’t score in the third term – a similar outcome in their loss to Central District on Anzac weekend. Port can get into good positions, it just needs to hold them.
2. Two Sams rack up the numbers
Sam Colquhoun and Sam Gray were Port Adelaide’s leading players on Saturday. Colquhoun ended the game with 32 disposals, 20 marks, 20 kicks, one inside-50 and a clearance. Gray responded to being left out of the club's AFL side with 27 possessions, six clearances and 10 tackles. The pair made a statement with their numbers and arguably improved their case for AFL selection in the not-so-distant future.
3. Eagles flying north
The Eagles sit fourth after their win over Port Adelaide on Saturday and have only lost two games this season, to ladder leaders South Adelaide and Adelaide. The Eagles' fast break style of football which stems from their ability to create space on the outside is exciting to watch.
4. Magpies face a stiff challenge against South
But there's enough evidence to show they can mix it with the big boys. Injuries are one thing, but Port has shown it can generate a score. South are coming off a surprise loss to Sturt and will be hungry to atone, with a week off for the SANFL-VFL match in a fortnight, Chad Cornes's men have a chance to chalk up a third win for the year.
