THE AFL appears likely to grant Port Adelaide approval to play its now-iconic pre-bounce anthem – INXS’s Never Tear Us Apart – before its historic first AFL final at the Adelaide Oval.

The Power could play at the ground in either the first, second or third week of finals, depending on the fall of results.

If the AFL grants Port Adelaide the unprecedented opportunity to implement its much-talked about game day experience in the AFL Finals Series, it would represent a terrific coup for the club and its supporters, according to chief executive Keith Thomas.

“We understand the League is likely to grant us permission to run our traditional game day experience in our first AFL final at the Oval, including Never Tear Us Apart,” Mr Thomas told portadelaidefc.com.au.

“If the AFL do approve this, it will be warmly welcomed by all of our members and supporters and, I’m sure, the wider football industry.

“Our game day experience is now widely recognised as the best in Australian sport, and Never Tear Us Apart is just one, albeit one incredibly popular, aspect of that.

“Never Tear Us Apart has resonated so strongly with our people because it reflects the history and culture of our club, and we keenly await the AFL’s final decision on the matter.”

While the AFL appears set to grant permission for Port Adelaide to play the song before the start of a final at the Oval, it may be conditional on whether the Adelaide Crows finish eighth and the Power fifth to set up just the second 'finals Showdown'.

Mr Thomas said he was hopeful the Crows would endorse Port Adelaide playing its stirring anthem before the game in the interests of sportsmanship and goodwill during the finals.

“I think Adelaide does understand the importance and significance of the song to our people, and I’m sure they’d endorse and support us playing it before the game to generate a truly spectacular atmosphere that could be enjoyed by supporters of all clubs including those neutral supporters who simply want to go to the footy and enjoy a fantastic match day.”
