Matt Thomas was the pick of the lot with a dominant performance for the Redlegs in their win over Sturt.
Playing through the middle and across half-back, Thomas racked up over 30 touches after being omitted from the Power's side that defeated St Kilda on Saturday night.
“He was very, very good again,” Port's football development manager Daniel Healy told portadelaidefc.com.au.
“His handballs were very effective in close and you can imagine how the boggy conditions suited his type of footy.
“Very clean, very strong, very effective – a great game from Thommo.”
He was ably supported by Brent Renouf who, while his stats may not indicate it, played a solid game for a ruckman in the hostile conditions.
“It’s the second week in a row he’s got a bit of footy around the ground and he did a pretty good job up forward with three shots at goal,” Healy explained.
“It’s hard to see how a big ruckman like him goes when conditions are as bad as they were out there, but he’s certainly been moving better than he had been previously.
“I was really pleased with his effort.”
Lewis Stevenson and Darren Pfeiffer both had solid performances for the Redlegs, while Healy described Jack Hombsch’s performance for Sturt as “solid”, despite a lack of his usual strong marking efforts in the air.
Port’s SANFL side was soundly beaten by the Roosters on a wet day at Prospect and few of the Power’s players at the ground stood out.
Ben Newton and the rookie-listed Justin Hoskin availed themselves the best according to development coach Stuart Cochrane.
“Hoskin had a decent game and his ball use and intercept marks were much better this week,” Cochrane told portadelaidefc.com.au.
“Defensively he was solid, had a few kicks and it was good to see him get through had have a bit more of an impact this week.
“Newton had heaps of ‘first hands’ at the footy and looks really confident with the ball at the moment.
“He’s really busy around stoppages and working hard to get the clearances as well - him and Hosko were probably the best guys for the Maggies on the day.”
Aaron Young and Brendon Ah Chee were pleasing in parts of the game, but Cochrane wants to see the pair impact with the ball for longer periods.
Nathan Blee had a solid uncontested game for the Roosters which netted him another goal playing through the middle of the ground and rotating off the bench.
Rookie-listed Danny Butcher played in the reserves for the Magpies and had 18 touches, but struggled to reproduce the physical aspects of his game which he used to good effect during the early parts of the year.
Club recruiter Brett Knowles saw three Power players in action at Noarlunga Oval, with Mason Shaw having an impressive game for the victorious Panthers.
“Mason rotated with the other rucks and tall forwards and he did quite well for a big feller on a wet and windy day,” Knowles told portadelaidefc.com.au.
“He still needs to work on being consistently intense in his efforts but he did score three really nice, skilful goals and had a few other good bits of play around the ground.”
Cameron Hitchcock struggled to get into the game for Glenelg on a day where the Panthers dominated on their home turf.
His teammate Tom Clurey was reasonable across half-back according to Knowles and played against one of the competition’s best regular forwards in Josh Thewlis.
“Tommy played on Josh Thewlis all day,” said Knowles.
“Thewlis only had eight touches for the day and he kicked a couple of goals – he’s one of the smarter forwards in the comp so I think Tom would have got some good experience playing alongside him in a number of one-on-one contests.”
Campbell Heath and Nick Salter both lined up for the Eagles in their win over Central Districts.
Heath provided solid rebound from defensive 50 while Salter kicked two goals and had five clearances.
