ROUND 22 of the SANFL season saw four matches played simultaneously around Adelaide.
The Magpies kept their finals chances alive with a win over Glenelg down at the Bay, while the 2010 grand final rematch saw Central District strong victors over Norwood. North Adelaide defeated South Adelaide by 9 points, while the Eagles had a convincing victory over the Bloods.
Sturt had the bye.
All games were watched closely by development manager Daniel Healy and development coach Matthew Nicks. Their full report is below.
Player of the Week
Callum Hay (for Roosters reserves vs Panthers)
This was definitely Hay’s best game for the year. He had 25 possessions and his defensive acts were top-notch, but importantly he made a lot of great decisions when in possession, and probably looked to be as sharp and move with the most intensity that we’ve seen all year. Hopefully he can finish off the year with some really good form with North’s reserves side still a chance of making the finals.
Daniel Stewart (for Roosters vs Panthers)
This was Snowy’s quietest game for some time at SANFL level - he was well held by the South defence, with the tighter game not being as free-flowing as North have been in recent times. He had a couple of shots at goal but wasn’t the dominant force that he has been of late in the SANFL.
Daniel Bass (for Panthers vs Roosters)
Bass battled away in the ruck, and it wasn’t his best game in that position, but what he did do that was particularly pleasing was take a couple of marks up forward and kick 1 goal 1, which is a part of his game that he’s been doing a lot of work with, including a big contested grab in the goal square. We’re seeing improvement in different areas of his game each week.
Kane Cornes (for Tigers vs Magpies)
Kane was very good once again, picking up 30 possessions and being an important part of Glenelg’s midfield as they went down to the Magpies at home - he worked hard to get the ball and most importantly was strong in his defensive actions, laying 4 tackles.
Jarrad Redden (for Eagles vs Bloods)
Reddo put in a very impressive performance playing a second ruck role dropping down forward for small stints here and there, but most of his good work was done in the ruck. He got some good first use for the Eagles, running forward out of stoppages and using his strength to advantage. He was tested early when Parry left the field before returning, and played a really strong role for that quarter - he was very influential and could’ve kicked a couple of goals that cannoned into the post.
Michael Pettigrew (for Bloods vs Eagles)
Petters really attacked the ball leading up from the forward half of the ground, and that was the best part of his game - playing up forward he was starved of opportunity with there not being a lot of football coming through that position.
Daniel Webb (for Bloods vs Eagles)
In the ruck against two big bodies in Parry and Redden he was beaten on the day with the opposition too experienced and too strong for him to really compete at stoppages. He battled hard and tried to work himself into the game as he’s had some good form leading up to this game, but unfortunately this week the opposition were too strong with the Eagles well on top when he was up forward as well.
Jason Davenport (for Bloods vs Eagles)
Dav probably played his best game for a month - he was involved in the play, and when he went to half-back for the last quarter he looked a lot more influential on the game, with a lot of football coming through that defensive half with the Eagles well on top. It might be an interesting position for him to assess as he goes forward, and it will give him another string to his bow.
