Having been drafted by Brisbane with pick 5 in the 2010 National Draft from Woodville-West Torrens, Polec got his debut in Round 3 of 2011. The then 18-year-old had a respectable 18 disposals, six marks and two tackles but the Lions let slip a 25-point quarter time lead to lose the game by 11 points. He managed just 16 games in three years with the Lions because of constant injury issues.
Port Adelaide debut
Polec was traded to Port Adelaide at the end of 2013, saying he always dreamed of playing for the club. He played his first game in Power colours in Round 1, 2014 against Carlton. The 150th player to represent the club in the AFL, he would have 24 touches, four marks and a goal in that game. Port won by 33 points with Justin Westhoff booting five goals and Robbie Gray four. Ollie Wines had 28 touches and booted two goals.
50th game
Polec’s 50th game milestone came in the Round 6, 2016 game against Richmond at the MCG. He had 23 touches, six marks and four tackles as the Power beat the Tigers by 35 points. On that day Bachar Houli had 34 touches for the home side, while Jarman Impey booted three goals for the visitors.
Career-best year
While his 2014 and 2017 years were pretty good as well, in 2018 Polec seems to have taken his game to another level. He has achieved career highs for kicks (24 against Brisbane in Round 3), handballs (16 against North Melbourne in Round 6), disposals (34 against North Melbourne in Round 6), marks (12 against Brisbane in Round 3) and tackles (12 against North Melbourne in Round 6). He is also ranked 14th in the competition for metres gained with a total of 6558.
Most goals in a game
Not a renowned goal kicker, the left-footer has booted three goals in a game twice in his career. The first time came in Round 7, 2014 against Greater Western Sydney in his first year with the Power. He also had a then career-high 30 disposals that day in a best on ground performance. Later that season, in round 15 against Adelaide he repeated his three-goal feat. He has also booted two goals on eight occasions.
Brownlow votes
Polec has polled eleven Brownlow Medal votes across his career, with all coming during his time at Alberton. The 25-year-old polled five votes in his first year at the club in 2014, two votes during 2016 and four in the 2017 season.
