THE POWER won’t shy away from its trademark ‘take the game on’ football against Melbourne this afternoon, despite three consecutive losses coming into the all-important game.
While its best football has clearly been muted by West Coast, Brisbane and Richmond, small defender Jarman Impey says a renewed focus on its key areas will be critical to turning the Power’s season around.
ROLL CALL: Port Adelaide's Indigenous players
Echoing Ken Hinkley during the week, Impey says the turn won’t come without hard work and persistence, and with Melbourne coming off an important win last week, both sides should come to unfamiliar territory evenly matched.
“We know it’s not going to turn straight away, but we’re just keeping at it, keeping training well, and that’s what we’ve been doing in the past couple of weeks,” Impey said.
“[Our] execution hasn’t been there, but we’re not going to shy away from ‘Port Adelaide football’, we’re going to play as hard and as fast as we can and just going to keep focussing on that.
“I don’t think we have an advantage, it’s nice and even and Melbourne is in great nick. We’re looking for to it.”
Defence is a key theme of the Power game plan and while players like Impey form part of that backline structure, its expected every player will defend on the ground at all times.
It’s been down the past month and has been a theme continually pushed within the playing group.
“We probably haven’t been doing [defence] well enough – coming off a few losses – we say that our defence is good but not where it should be,” Impey said.
“That’s been one of our main focusses coming in [to] defend well.”
