NO

Hombschy has been a beast down back this year and he’s in career-best form. At just 22, he’s got the potential to be one of the premiere defenders in the AFL. I think he’ll be high in this year’s B&F, but I think we’ve got some other guys who’ll be ahead of him. Robbie Gray has continued his 2014 All-Australian form, leading the league for clearances per game and upping his defensive pressure to be in the top 20 in tackles per game in the AFL. The skipper Travis Boak has excellent all year and has stood up in some tough situations and vice-captain Brad Ebert has hardly missed a beat in 2015. With those three midfield stars all having consistent years, I just don’t think Hombschy will quite be leading the John Cahill Medal at this point. – Andrew Fuss

YES

If it comes down to playing a role, Homma has been exemplary. There’s something to be said for standing up when the chips are down, and through that barren May, he was one of few to be consistently up and around the mark. He was truly Port’s best against Richmond and was super solid when Melbourne were running amok in the opening 45 minutes last Saturday. Few realise that he plays roles against some of the league’s top forwards and does so with a no frills, fly-under-the-radar approach. Yes, the mids have been good this year, but have they stood up in May? Don’t be surprised if this defender is around the mark come Round 9 on John Cahill Medal night. – Matthew Agius
