The teams that defeated Central District in the 1995 and 1996 SANFL Grand Finals will get together after 20 years to remember Port Adelaide’s last two flags in the state league before joining the AFL.

With skipper Tim Ginever leading the way, members of the two premiership teams will relive some cracking memories after the Magpies host the Bulldogs at Alberton Oval on Saturday.

And they insist supporters should be able to join in the fun.

“Our supporters are what has always made this club great, and hopefully if we get a few upstairs with us after Saturday’s game against Central they’ll slip me a couple of bucks like the in the old days,” laughs Timmy G.

“1995 was a flag that cemented this as a football dynasty under Jack Cahill, and left people in no doubt we were the right club to enter the AFL.

“There were some great players in these two premiership teams – Northeast, Hodges, Darren and Rohan Smith, Brian Leys, young Stephen Carter, Meady, Greg Anderson, Michael Wilson, not to mention Fiacchi and Delaney … so I won’t.

“It will be a great night and we’d love to celebrate it with the supporters who were there with us.”

Port Adelaide’s 1995 premiership was the club’s tenth under John Cahill, who stepped down from the senior role midway through 1996 to focus on the club’s jump into the AFL competition.

It is the third premiership celebrated by the club this year, following celebrations of the 25-year anniversary of Port Adelaide’s defeat of Glenelg in the 1990 SANFL Grand Final and the 50-year celebration of the 1965 premiership over Sturt.
